The Oklahoma Board of Regents agreed to a new contract for Sooners head football coach, Bob Stoops, that will make him one of the highest-paid coaches in college football.

Stoops’ new contract is worth $39.9 million over the next seven seasons. He will make $5.25 million in 2014 and will reach the $6 million per season mark in 2019, according to The Norman Transcript’s John Shinn. Stoops will make $6.15 million in the final season of his deal that runs through 2020.

He can also make an additional $275,000 if he wins the College Football Playoff national championship.

Stoops is tied with Kirk Ferentz of Iowa as the second and third longest tenured head coaches in college football, trailing only Frank Beamer of Virginia Tech. He was hired in 1999 after stops as Florida, Kansas State, Kent State and Iowa.

With a 160-39 career record, Stoops passed Barry Switzer as the school’s all-time wins leader last season when the Sooners finished 11-2 after trouncing Alabama in the Sugar Bowl and were ranked No. 6 in the final AP and Coaches Poll.

Stoops has a 99-24 record in the Big 12 with eight conference championships, an 8-7 mark in bowl games, with four of those wins coming in BCS bowls, including the 2000 Orange Bowl when the Sooners defeated the Florida State Seminoles to win the BCS National Championship and is a two-time Walter Camp Coach of the Year recipient.

The Board of Regents also approved raises for Stoops’ coaching staff, including offensive coordinator Josh Heupel who will make $605,000 per year in his new three-year deal and defensive coordinator Mike Stoops will make $850,000 per year over the next three seasons.

A $370 million upgrade to Gaylord Family-Oklahoma Memorial Stadium was also approved during Wednesday morning’s meeting.
