On the morning of the 2014 NBA Draft, the Denver Nuggets made waves by acquiring stud shooting guard Arron Afflalo from the Orlando Magic, but the biggest part of that acquisition may have been their ability to execute it without giving up their first round draft pick. Now, the Nuggets have selected former Creighton forward Doug McDermott with the 11th overall pick.

While most people believed that Doug McDermott would land in the top ten, this could be an ideal scenario for one of the best players in college basketball history. At 6-foot-8, he has the size to be able to get his trademark jump shot off in tight spaces, but the biggest question mark surrounding McDermott is almost assuredly his relative lack of athleticism.

The athletic questions that will certainly plague him will manifest themselves on the defensive end above all else. It would be a mistake to believe that Doug McDermott is “just” a shooter, and his ability to create his own offense should be helped by the fact that he tested much better in the athletic measurements than anyone originally believed. Denver is in desperate need of both shooting and offensive variety, and this is an addition that makes a great deal of sense.

There will almost certainly be a segment of the NBA world that believes that Doug McDermott will fail at the next level, but if he can translate his impressive offensive skill set to the league, he could succeed immediately.
