The Detroit Pistons are finally out of the salary cap hell placed upon them by former general manager Joe Dumars and they appear eager to spend some of that newly minted money. Of course, we’ve already heard that the Pistons don’t plan to make a big splash but that doesn’t mean they’re not looking to improve.

More from Detroit Pistons

Detroit’s main concern is likely their own restricted free agent, Greg Monroe, though outside of potentially re-signing the Georgetown product the Pistons have already ten players they’ve targeted in free agency.

That’s the word from Keith Langlois who spoke to head coach Stan Vun Gundy on Saturday.

“We know exactly who we want to talk to (in free agency) on July 1,” said Van Gundy.

While the Pistons organization seems to know, they’re understandably not going to let the proverbial cat out of the bag so who exactly they have interest in is an unknown. Van Gundy did go on to hint that Detroit’s biggest needs are at the shooting guard and small forward position, though they could conceivably use an upgrade at all of their backcourt positions.

With just $40 million dollars in committed salary, the Detroit Pistons will have some cap room to work with, though it’s not known what type of contract Monroe will command. Of course, the Pistons could opt to sign-and-trade their power forward if he is to sign an offer sheet elsewhere but they’ve been pretty intent on keeping him.

It’s possible the Detroit Pistons could also create additional cap space by trading away Josh Smith, who is due $13.5 million dollars this season.
