NBA Rumors: Los Angeles Lakers to go after big name free agents?

The Los Angeles Lakers only have three players on their roster for the upcoming 2014-15 season which has left the franchise with an absurdly large amount of cap space. It’s been a plan the Lakers front office has been working on since 2010 when they knew LeBron James would have an early termination clause in his contract with the Miami Heat.

Given that, the Lakers put themselves in position to be a team of interest to big name free agents like James and general manager Mitch Kupchak, appearing on the Dan Patrick Show, suggested the franchise will make a play for available elite talent.

“If you have the kind of cap room we do, why wouldn’t you go after them.”

It’s an obvious and fair point. The Lakers not only bring with them significant cap space but they also play in one of the most desired locations in the country and have one of the proudest traditions in all of sports, let alone the NBA. Clearly they bring with them a significant amount of pluses for any free agent, big or small.

Earlier today it was reported that Carmelo Anthony, another prized free agent, will meet with the Los Angeles Lakers in the near future though such a meeting is apparently out of respect more than Anthony’s interested in playing near Hollywood.

Regardless, the Los Angeles Lakers certainly have plenty to pitch to prospective free agents and it sounds like they’re readying themselves to do so. Getting them to sign on the dotted line, however, is a different story.
