Texas Tech has had success on the football field before, but it’s never translated to preseason hype like the Red Raiders are experiencing ahead of the 2014 season. On Monday, the Texas Tech athletic department announced it had done something it had never done in school history—sell out of season tickets.

More from College Football

The Red Raiders announced that a record 38,502 season tickets were purchased this season, topping last years mark by over 7,000 and besting the previous high of 32,227 in the 2010 season.

Having a young, energetic and charismatic former star quarterback as your head coach hasn’t hurt the sales of tickets much. Kliff Kingsbury’s arrival last season brought new life to a program that was just OK before him, and the Red Raiders went 8-5 in his first go as a head coach anywhere.

Kingsbury’s status as a beloved former player and his exciting twist to the Air-Raid offense he learned under Mike Leach and perfected while at Houston and Texas A&M not only have fans buzzing, but elite recruits taking a look at Lubbock, Texas as more than an afterthought.

Last season the Red Raiders managed to set a student attendance record in the season opener against FCS opponent Stephen F. Austin, with 14,915 students packing Jones AT&T Stadium.

It also doesn’t hut that Texas Tech has one of the most attractive home schedules in the Big 12 either. After taking on Arkansas at home in the non-conference slate, Texas Tech will take on West Virginia, Texas and Oklahoma at home in conference play. The Red Raiders then end the regular season against Baylor at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.
