The 6-4, 205-pound Johnson is the nation’s No. 874 recruit overall regardless of position, No. 103 receiver and the No. 25 ranked player in the state of Alabama, according to the 247Sports Composite Rankings.
“Really, it’s that family atmosphere and working with the coaches that I like,” Johnson tells 247Sports. “They coach you hard but they also show you love off the field. And that is how it was with Coach (Billy) Gonzales, Coach Mullen and Coach (Geoff) Collins and all their coaches. … “And they teach you a lot. When I was at camp there in June, Coach Gonzales taught me how to get my head around when you are coming out of breaks. And I got a lot of foot knowledge today about my steps.”
Johnson had 616 receiving yards and six touchdowns last year as a junior for one of the top high school programs in Alabama and the nation and his relationship with the Mississippi State coaching staff and the atmosphere in Starkville was enough for him to shut down his recruitment.
“It’s great here,” said Johnson. “I love the atmosphere every time I come up here. I love the coaches and I just have a great time when I come up there. It is really just a big family and it was the first school I went to that showed me a lot of love. Coach (Geoff) Collins is a good man and Coach Billy Gonzales is a great coach.
With the addition of Johnson, Mississippi State owns the nation’s No. 14 class overall and the No. 8 class in the SEC, according to the 247Sports team rankings.
