The San Francisco Giants currently sit a half game out of first place in the National League West and with a victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers on Sunday evening, could perch themselves back atop the division with newly acquired starter Jake Peavy leading the way.

More from MLB

The former Cy Young award winner was acquired by the San Francisco Giants on Saturday morning with the intention to add depth to an already impressive starting rotation. But Peavy’s acquisition might have also been for insurance considering the creaky elbow of Matt Cain.

Currently on the disabled list with bone chips, Cain hasn’t been responding well to treatment and there is fear in the San Francisco Giants organization that he may not pitch again this season.

"The longest-tenured Giant was placed on the disabled list Monday with elbow inflammation, and sources say the number of bone chips in his pitching elbow “is significant.” Sabean couldn’t commit to Cain’s pitching again this season, saying he is following the lead of the organization’s medical team."

In what is likely to be a race to the wire between the Giants and Dodgers, losing a player of Cain’s caliber for an extended period (or for the remainder of the year) would be a crushing blow to San Francisco, though if there is a silver lining it’s that Matt Cain didn’t pitch well this season. They still hold one of the best records in baseball without Cain, though continuing on that streak may prove to be a bit of a challenge.
