The San Francisco Giants appear to be in prime position for a playoff run, though shockingly have a number of holes they’d like to fill before the trade deadline passes.

More from MLB Trade Rumors

With their recent trade for Jake Peavy, the Giants have seemingly reinforced their starting rotation and are now looking for help at second base and in the outfield.

No matter what the Giants have tried at second, they’ve ran into issues. There have been rumors linking them to players like Ben Zobrist, but his price is said to be rather high and it’s unknown if San Francisco would be willing to meet such a demand.

One player who may not cost as much and fills another hole is Marlon Byrd of the Philadelphia Phillies. Multiple teams have expressed interest in the veteran outfielder though ironically, Byrd owns a limited no-trade clause and teams like the Kansas City Royals and Seattle Mariners (interested parties) are on it.

Given that, the Phillies are having more difficulty trading Marlon Byrd than they anticipated but the San Francisco Giants may be a suitor, so says ESPN.

"So that leaves Seattle, which is still looking for a bat, and possibly the Giants, who are also shopping for potential offensive upgrades, and have asked the Phillies about Marlon Byrd, but are prioritizing second base. And while talks are ongoing, the Phillies don’t appear to have a clear path to a deal with either club."

It’s not known as to where Byrd would fit on a healthy Giants club with Angel Pagan in center and Michael Morse and Hunter Pence at the corners. Of course, their interest may be a suggestion that they fear Angel Pagan’s injury is worse than is being lead on.
