In one of the more surprising moves of a day full of deals, the Florida Marlins traded prospects Jake Marisnick, Frances Martes, Colin Moran, and their 2015 “competitive balance” draft pick to the Houston Astros for 24 year old pitcher Jarred Cosart, Austin Wates, and Enrique Hernandez.

What makes this deal so unique is that all of the players involved are very young. The Marlins made a trade to bolster their pitching while keeping the team young. The Astros got plenty in return, including Moran. They strongly considered taking him first overall last year instead of Mark Appel. The Marlins took Moran sixth overall.
The biggest impact from a fantasy standpoint, at least this year, is with Cosart. He was 9-7 with a 4.41 ERA in Houston this year, and his move to the National League should help those numbers. He is a good buy-low option for those of you in dynasty formats.
As for the rest of you, I would recommend picking him up in all deep leagues, and even in some moderate leagues if you need pitching help. It is not out of the realm of possibility that Cosart’s ERA could go down close to a full run in Miami. He is certainly worth taking a chance on.
The only other household name in this deal right now is Jake Marisnick. He has long been considered one of the Marlins’ better prospects because of his speed. He has five steals in just 48 at bats this year, and will be the starting center fielder in Houston effective immediately. With Dexter Fowler still without a timetable for a return, Marisnick could run away with the job. Literally.
For those of you in moderate or deep leagues in need of a speed boost, Marisnick is a very good pickup. He is not solid enough for standard leagues just yet.
Hernandez had played pretty well for the Astros in center field, but will likely be reduced to a utility role for the Marlins. He is not worth hanging on to in any league at this point.
For those of you in dynasty leagues, Moran should have already been on your radar and/or owned. While this move does nothing to expedite his trip to the major leagues, he is definitely worth keeping an eye on should the Astros tire of Matt Dominguez‘s low average.
