Before the Boston Red Sox traded away ace pitcher Jon Lester, there were rumors swirling that suggested the free agent to be could re-sign with the Boston Red Sox for next season.

More from Boston Red Sox

Jon Lester didn’t do anything but help fan those flames with his comments and now it’s former Red Sox teammate David Ortiz who is throwing gasoline on the rumors.

Speaking with Tom Verducci of MLB Network, David Ortiz hinted that Jon Lester could very well return next season once his contract runs out with the Oakland A’s.

“I wasn’t happy,” Ortiz said of the Lester trade, via Larry Brown Sports. “That’s one of my pretty good friends and teammates for a long time. And the season he was having … always wish him the best. But I have a feeling I will play with him again before my career ends.”

We know the chances of David Ortiz playing anywhere but with the Boston Red Sox is slim to none, so Big Papi’s suggestion that he will ‘play with him again’ is a pretty clear indication that he expects Lester back with Boston at some point.

Might it be this offseason? It seems rather logical assuming Jon Lester and the Boston Red Sox can find a middle ground on a contract, something they weren’t able to do over the past season plus as they tabled extension talks on more than one occasion.

If it does happen, it’s an epic move from the Red Sox front office who would have essentially lent Lester out for the final two months of the season and in return nabbed a fantastic hitter (Yoenis Cespedes) in the process.
