South Carolina Gamecocks self-report 7 NCAA violations
The University of South Carolina Gamecocks football program self-reported seven secondary violations to the NCAA this weekend and the absurdity of some of the organizations rules came center-stage. You see, one of the violations reported was for “impermissible icing” on cookie cakes.

No seriously, there is an NCAA rule prohibiting certain types of icing on cookie cakes. Talk about jumping the shark, huh?
Just wait, because things only get better from there. The Gamecocks also self-reported violations that included a recruit attending the spring game and taking a selfie with a former Gamecock currently in the NFL. According to NCAA rules recruits are not permitted to talk with those folks at all.
Then there was a violation when a prospect put on a non-personalized jersey and snapped a picture on the football field to announce his commitment to the Gamecocks. Oh the horror! To be fair, that one is on the SEC, who has a rule against that happening apparently.
However, a few were a bit more of the serious nature, as three of the violations were from impermissible text messaging with recruits. Those are rules coaches should know inside-out, and while not likely to cause a suspension or anything really bad it was just boneheaded.
All of the violations taken in to account, it just goes to show how ridiculous the NCAA rulebook has become. Is it any wonder the “Power 5” conferences want more autonomy in making their own rules?
Hopefully common sense wins out on the recruiting trail from here on out.
