Hunter, 25, has been a valuable change-of-pace running back behind starting running back Frank Gore since the 49ers took him out of Oklahoma State in the fourth round of the 2011 NFL Draft.
The club is hopeful no one will claim the 5-7, 100-pound back so they can stash him on the injured reserve and continue to monitor his rehab as he has an expiring contract at the end of the season.
The roster spot of LaMichael James would appear to be a lock, even though he is recovering from a dislocated elbow, and Carlos Hyde will be in line for a significant role as the second round pick out of Ohio State will be the No. 2 back on the depth chart.
San Francisco is still holding out hope that last year’s fourth round pick Marcus Lattimore can be a contributor on the field this season after he was on injured reserve all of last season as he recovered from the leg and knee injuries that ended his junior year at South Carolina and saw him drop from a first round prospect to the fourth round.
The 49ers have said they would like to re-sign Hunter even after the knee injury. Hunter appeared in all 16 games last year and ran for 358 yards on 78 carries and had three touchdowns.
