After losing to the Denver Broncos in the AFC Championship Game, Gregory hoped to return to the New England Patriots in 2014 and make a run at the Super Bowl. With the team acting aggressively in free agency (the Patriots signed former New York Jets and Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ cornerback Darrelle Revis, former Seattle Seahawks’ cornerback Brandon Browner and former Carolina Panthers’ wife receiver Brandon LaFell and re-signed their leading pass-catcher, wide receiver Julian Edelman), they are clearly one of the favorites.
However, the Patriots released Gregory before free agency even began despite starting in 23 games over the last season. With Pro Bowler Devin McCourty locking down on spot and rookie Duron Harmon performing fairly well when Gregory was hurt last season, he was expendable.
Gregory found a new home with another playoff team, signing with the Kansas City Chiefs after star safety Eric Berry suffered an injury.
Gregory won’t be suiting up for the Chiefs this season after all – he announced his retirement on Saturday.
Gregory released a statement about his retirement through his agency, DEC Management.
Gregory had made the most of his talent, carving out a nine-year NFL career despite going undrafted out of Syracuse back in 2006. He spent his first six seasons with the San Diego Chargers and played very well at times before joining the Patriots before the 2012 season. Gregory finishes his career with 357 tackles, 3.0 sacks and seven interceptions.
Plus, he’ll always have his part in this play to remember him by.
