When you think of the best pitchers in Major League Baseball, a few names immediately come to mind. There’s of course Clayton Kershaw of the Los Angeles Dodgers and Felix Hernandez of the Seattle Mariners. But what about Chris Sale of the Chicago White Sox?

More from Chicago White Sox

Oddly overlooked by many, Chris Sale has not only emerged as one of the better starting pitchers in the MLB – he’s also an All-Star when it comes to linguistics.

If you haven’t watched the Chicago White Sox or Chris Sale much this season, you’re probably not aware that he’s been introducing strange words into his interviews. I mean, really strange words. Check out a handful from the list below.

• Nascence
• Ruminate
• Repudiate
• Antithetic
• Dichotomy
• Cacophony

So where are the unique words coming from? None other than Bryan Johnson, the team’s baseball video coordinator who has put Chris Sale up to the challenge since the start of the season.

Players will often find ways to make a rather monotonous 162-game season a little less boring and this seems to be something Sale and the White Sox are thoroughly enjoying. It doesn’t sound like they’re going to be giving up the ghost anytime soon either.

“When you commit to something as serious as this, you have to ride it out through the good and the bad,” Sale said. “We had said that we were going to do it every start this year. In a sense, me and Bryan are on a team now, and I can’t let my team down. I have two teams to play for a night.”

Next time you check out a Chris Sale interview, listen closely.
