When it comes to flash and stealing the moment, Carlos Gomez of the Milwaukee Brewers does not like to be outdone. So it was that Gomez robbed Baez, and emphatically so, with a leaping catch at the wall on Tuesday night at Wrigley Field.
As is always the case with the animated Gomez, the athleticism and talent to make the catch itself make up only half the story. The other half of the story consists of the fist pumping, the pointing, and the whatever else happens so that he can indicate to the rest of us just how great he is for making that play.
Say this for the Milwaukee center fielder: again and again he backs up his lively and sometimes annoying disposition with a high quality of play. He does so at the plate and especially in the field. On this play he was able to make a statement with his glove and do so against a hitter who has quickly established himself as a rising star.
