The Cleveland Browns have a quarterback controversy, which is something that everyone naturally assumed would happen when Johnny Manziel was drafted out of Texas A&M and was placed in a position to win the starting role from Brian Hoyer.

But leave it up to Rex Grossman to be the wrench that throws everything out of whack, as his signing the other day has caused Brian Hoyer trade rumors to run rampant throughout the NFL rumor mill on Wednesday. The Browns have taken opportunities and even created a few to shoot down talk of a Hoyer trade, which is both comforting yet possibly cryptic.

This time, Pettine appeared on Mike and Mike in the Morning to shoot down trade rumors surrounding Brian Hoyer now that Rex Grossman is in town and Johnny Manziel is the darling of every major media outlet.

"“I got that question yesterday, and that’s really not the case. It was just something that we looked to upgrade that third [quarterback] spot. We think the world of Brian, and he’s been real solid for us, has done nothing to have that job taken away. We’re really pleased with where he is. A lot of people don’t realize it — he played against Detroit [in the preseason opener Saturday]. That was his first live action since coming off a serious knee injury, and we thought he handled himself very well.”"

Manziel will likely be the starter Week 1, but he was unimpressive in his preseason debut, which has many wondering if Hoyer might be able to edge him for the starting role.

That’s, of course, assuming he isn’t traded to make way for Manziel to start, which is now a new situation to monitor as Browns training camp continues.
