Chicago Cubs grounds crew suffers epic tarp failure (Video)

The skies opened up over Wrigley Field in the fifth inning of Tuesday night’s Cubs-Giants game, taking everyone in the ball park by surprise including the grounds crew who had to quickly scramble to get the tarp on the field despite the massive downpour.

Long story short, the rain won.
The grounds crew fought valiantly to get the tarp spread over the infield before it turned into something resembling the consistency of soup but to no avail.
The water quickly made the tarp too heavy to move and large areas of the field remained exposed to the deluge.
The massive tarp fail left the field in an unplayable condition, leading to a three-plus hour delay as the grounds crew attempted to dry off the moisture.
Cubs catcher John Baker managed to find a way of amusing himself in the dugout while waiting for the game to resume.
In the end, the game would not be resumed, and would go in the books as a 2-0 Cubs victory since the rain came in the bottom of the fifth. How convenient for the Cubs that their grounds crew was unable to get the tarp on the field, leaving the surface so muddy the game could not be resumed.
When you’re the Cubs you’ll take it. When you’re the Giants and you’re battling for a playoff spot…you’re going to have a hard time swallowing that one.
