Atletico Madrid as the winners of La Liga host the second-leg of the home-and-home series. The aggregate score coming into the game was 1-1, setting up a thrilling finish.

The game lived up to the hype in the second leg. Just 90 seconds into the game, Atletico Madrid striker Mario Mandzukic scored to give his side the lead.

It was a small form of payback from Mandzukic who was punched in the face in the first leg by Sergio Ramos. Mandzukic’s goal shows why Atletico Madrid went out to get him to replace Diego Costa, who left for Chelsea FC over the summer.

Later in the first half there were some interesting situations. Real Madrid’s Fábio Coentrão knees Atletico Madrid’s Juanfran in the face and he was down for a while. He left the pitch to change his jersey because of bleeding, and the referee took his time to wave him on as the Real Madrid attack peppered the goal with shots. This drew the protests of the Atletico Madrid side and head coach.

Later in the first half, Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone was thrown out of the game for either being on the field and gesturing to the crowd, or for patting the fourth official on the back of the head.

Atletico and Real traded shots down the stretch in the first half with each coming close to scoring. The game ultimately went into the break with Atletico leading 1-0.

Superstar Cristiano Ronaldo started the game on the bench, but came on for new signee Toni Kroos at the start of the second half.

Real Madrid was dominating the possession in the game but couldn’t seem to get any chances to convert in the second half. There clearer chances came in the first half however.

In the waning moments of the second half it was Real Madrid playing more defense, of course all they needed was a goal to tie the aggregate up and force extra time. Luka Modric got his second yellow card in the 90th minute, getting sent off and leaving Real Madrid to play the four minutes of stoppage time with one less man than Atletico Madrid.

Sergio Ramos only got a header in on goal from a cross in the 92nd minute, but can’t score. It certainly looked like the chance they needed to tie the game. In the 93rd minute Real Madrid got a corner kick but Cristiano Ronaldo was called for a foul in the box.
