When the Dallas Mavericks signed Chandler Parsons in free agency, it was thought to be the move that broke the proverbial back of Shawn Marion’s return to Big D.

Soon after Parsons inked his deal, rumors began to leak suggesting Marion was looking to sign elsewhere. However, Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban says that Shawn Marion was interested in playing on another team well before they decided to sign Chandler Parsons.
“It’s different when you’re going back to your same team as supposed to going to a new team,” Cuban said. “I think there’s a different dynamic and different expectation. I have a great relationship with Shawn. We’ve kept in touch. We messaged yesterday. He just thought that he wanted to go to somebody that he thought, and this was all prior to signing Chandler [Parsons] and everything, that he thought was closer to a ring particularly in the Eastern Conference.”
It was thought that Shawn Marion wanted to return to the Dallas Mavericks and the addition of Parsons all but ended that relationship. However, according to Cuban it seems as if Marion was potentially interested in leaving well before the fact.
Of course, that could have been simple posturing on the part of Shawn Marion and his agent in effort to get a better contract with the Dallas Mavericks, though that may be something we’ll never known.
Dallas was said to still have interest in re-signing Marion even after the Parsons addition, however he apparently felt the grass was greener with the Cleveland Cavaliers.
