When the Minnesota Timberwolves decided they had to trade power forward Kevin Love, they targeted Thaddeus Young as a replacement. That’s why when they dealt Love to the Cleveland Cavaliers for Andrew Wiggins and Anthony Bennett, the deal became a three-team trade. They also sent guard Alexey Shved and Luc Richard Mbah a Moute to the Philadelphia 76ers for Young.

More from Minnesota Timberwolves

Of course, it could be a short stay for Young – he can become a free agent after the 2014-2015 season.

Jerry Zgoda of The Minneapolis Star Tribune thinks Young and the Timberwolves will likely work out an extension.

"Well, I think its most likely they reach some kind of extension, but straight up choice I’d say it’s more likely he doesn’t opt out than does because is he really, barring a great season, going to get $9.5M a year on open market?"

The Timberwolves are obviously very high on Young and will likely make keeping him a priority, hoping their core of Young, Nikola Peković, Bennett, Wiggins, Ricky Rubio and Zach LaVine can eventually turn the Timberwolves into contenders.

Young went for 17.9 points, 6.0 rebounds, 2.3 assists and 2.1 steals per game and shot 45.4% from the field, 30.8% from beyond the arc and 71.2% from the free throw line this season. In his seven-year NBA career (all with the 76ers), Young, who was the 12th-overall pick in the first round of the 2007 NBA Draft, has put up 13.7 points, 5.5 rebounds, 1.4 assists and 1.4 steals per game while shooting 50.0% from the floor, 32.1% from three and 70.0% from the charity stripe.
