The St. Louis Rams were going to be a run-heavy team before losing starting quarterback Sam Bradford for the season. But now without their top signal caller, the Rams are going to lean on the rushing attack even more.

More from Los Angeles Rams

Most figure that Zac Stacy will be the mean who carries the bulk of the load and that still may ring true, though it appears as if backup Benny Cunningham is not only showing he’ll be able to handle those duties, he might begin to take carries away from Stacy.

That’s the word from Jim Thomas who suggests that Benny Cunningham is barking up the tree of Zac Stacy and could even potentially take his job.

"If Benny Cunningham isn’t challenging Zac Stacy for the starting job, he’s certainly pushing him for playing time. He’s been the best Rams RB on the field this preseason."

It seems difficult to believe that the St. Louis Rams would give up on Zac Stacy this quickly, so the most likely scenario is Cunningham etching his way into the backup role and staying there for the time being. If Stacy is to struggle, it’s very possible that Cunningham could be given the eventual starting nod but right now it seems as if they’re still in their current roles.

One thing we may see is Cunningham simply on the field more which will force the opposing defense to respect both Stacy and Cunningham, a move which will be beneficial for both rushers.

Stacy losing his job as the St. Louis Rams starting running back seems questionable but losing playing time (assuming Cunningham keeps up his pace) isn’t that outlandish.
