The Milwaukee Brewers face nervous times as the 2014 MLB season comes down the home stretch. The St. Louis Cardinals are on the rise and they are getting healthy. Meanwhile, the San Francisco Giants passed Milwaukee for a hold on the top wild card spot on Friday night with a win.

Looking ahead, the Brewers are staring down some key games, including two more against the Giants this weekend before a lengthy home-stand that starts next week. With those games on the horizon and needing a boost, the Brewers might have good news about their starting rotation in the coming days.

Todd Rosiak of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports that Matt Garza is nearing his return to the rotation after pitching a successful simulated game on Friday.

"Manager Ron Roenicke was pleased with how it went, saying Garza threw his entire arsenal of pitches and displayed both good life on his pitches and good location. Garza even broke a couple of Mark Reynolds‘ bats, another positive sign.“I’m good,” Garza said. “I’m really happy with how it went. It was more anxiety than anything, but I felt great. That (anxiety) all went away after the first couple, and it was fun to be out there against my guys.”"

Predictably, the Brewers will proceed cautiously given the nature of Garza’s injury. Anytime a player, especially a pitcher, is dealing with an oblique or rib cage injury, a little bit of extra caution is called for. If this final hurdle has been cleared and Garza is good to go, it stands to inject some life into the Brewers as the calendar flips to September.
