To kick off the UFC Fight Night 50 main card on Friday night, Joe Lauzon and Michael Chiesa squared off in a lightweight bout at the Foxwoods Resort Casino in Ledyard, Connecticut.

Lauzon and Chiesa are two of the most exciting fighters in the UFC, so there was plenty of anticipation for what many believed would be a front-runner for Fight of the Night.

Round 1: As expected, Lauzon got off to a quick start and instantly clinched up with Chiesa. Chiesa was able to get the dominant position and push Lauzon against the cage, before separating and moving back to the center of the cage. Chiesa was throwing out his jab to keep Lauzon at a distance. Lauzon got Chiesa in a body lock and began looking for a takedown, but he was unable to get the fight to the mat. Chiesa, however, landed a takedown of his own and instantly began working to take Lauzon’s back. Lauzon reversed position and was the one who ended up taking his opponent’s back, before throwing some elbows to Chiesa’s head. Lauzon searched for the rear-naked choke with just 90 seconds remaining in the round but Chiesa was able to escape and the two men had a wild exchange as the round came to an end with each fighter getting in some solid shots. Round 2: Lauzon kept up the pace in the second round and landed a takedown after catching a knee strike from Chiesa. Lauzon attempted a rolling kimura, but Chiesa got right back to his feet. When the fight returned to the feet, Lauzon unloaded some vicious shots to the body and opened a nasty cut over Chiesa’s right eye with a knee. The doctor was forced to stop the fight because of the severity of the cut.
