Jonathan Lucroy breaks MLB doubles record for catchers

Jonathan Lucroy of the Milwaukee Brewers cracked a double in the first inning at Miller Park Saturday night against the St. Louis Cardinals, giving him 48 doubles on the season—the most ever for a player whose primary position is catcher, according to ESPN Stats & Info:
Lucroy leads the majors in doubles and would become the first catcher ever to lead his league in that category if he maintains his lead.

The previous record of 47 had been held by Ivan Rodriguez of the Texas Rangers in 1996.
Lucroy was a first-time All-Star this season and went into Saturday’s game hitting .299/.366/.476 in 132 games, with 13 homers and 62 RBI. He’s been the most consistent player for the Brewers this season and his offensive production combined with his pitch-framing ability have him in the discussion for the National League’s Most Valuable Player award.
Lucroy is currently this among NL position players at 5.8 Wins Above Replacement, according to baseball-reference.com.
He was a third-round pick out of Louisiana-Lafayette in 2007 and made his major-league debut in 2010. Lucroy is a lifetime .284/.340/.439 hitter and is second in the NL this season in extra-base hits with 62 and is the fifth-most difficult hitter in the league to strike out, averaging 7.9 at-bats per K.
