After having a fantastic season, returning to the postseason in 2013, the Kansas City Chiefs opened the 2014 season with high hopes.

More from Kansas City Chiefs

Although it is clearly too early to say those hopes were dashed, the Chiefs looked awful in their season opener Sunday afternoon, falling to the Tennessee Titans 26-10. The Chiefs were lit up by Titans’ quarterback Jake Locker, who finished 22-of-33 for 266 yards with two touchdowns.

Of course, the Chiefs won’t be the story. Instead, the story will be about quarterback Alex Smith because the Chiefs signed him to a four-year, $68 million extension in the offseason and plenty questioned the deal. Smith did nothing to silence the critics – he was awful on Sunday, completing just 19-of-35 passes for 202 yards with only one touchdown and three interceptions.

After the game, the hardcore Chiefs fans still headed over to KCChiefs.com in order to see press conferences from Smith, head coach Andy Reid and others. However, when viewers got to the website they were instead treated to the two 4 o’clock games – battles between the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Carolina Panthers and the San Francisco 49ers and Dallas Cowboys via the Red Zone channel.

Obviously, this won’t sit well with plenty of people. DirecTV pays a lot of money for the sole rights to these games and certainly don’t want to be giving anything away for free. Red Zone usually costs about $10 per month so they certainly don’t want someone showing these games for free either.
