The Baltimore Ravens released running back Ray Rice on Monday afternoon.

This came on the heels of TMZ releasing the complete footage from Rice on the night he assaulted his then fiancee and now wife, Janay Rice, at the Revel Casino. Initial footage showed Rice dragging his unconscious wife out of an elevator but there was no clear evidence showing how she was knocked out (although most of us probably had a good idea). The footage shows Rice punching his wife in the face and then attempting to drag her out of the elevator (kind of). Although the Ravens have stood by Rice throughout the offseason and accepted his two-game suspension, their public outcry and blacklash was just too much, which is why they finally released Rice.
A report also surfaced on Monday that NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell was suspending Rice indefinitely rather than simply leaving him with a two-game suspension (which he probably could have gotten away with because no team is going to pick up Rice anytime soon).
If Rice winds up being suspended for the entire season, Pro Football Talk points out the Ravens could have saved money by keeping him.
By cutting Ray Rice, Ravens sacrificed chance to recover lots of money from him, if NFL suspended him for the full season.

Of course, cutting Rice was the only move and the Ravens had to do it, no matter the financial impact.
