Might the Atlanta Hawks soon be owned by quite possibly their greatest player in franchise history?

More from Atlanta Hawks

While it may sound like something out of a movie, it’s apparently a possibility as TMZ reports Dominique Wilkins is ‘extremely interested’ in purchasing his former team. Not only that, Wilkins (who has previously done television work for the franchise) is said to have a wealthy group of investors backing him up and has allegedly already been pre-approved by the NBA in regards to potential ownership.

"Multiple NBA sources tell us … Dominique is “extremely interested” in becoming the next owner of the Hawks — and has already been pre-approved for ownership by the NBA.We’re told Wilkins — who has amassed his own small fortune over the years — has partnered up with a “very well-known businessman” who believes Wilkins would be the best person to lead the Hawks back to NBA glory."

The NBA would of course love to have a former face of the league atop the Atlanta Hawks franchise, so assuming the money is right you have to believe Dominique and his group will be serious bidders for the franchise.

Of course, he won’t be alone in his pursuit of the Atlanta Hawks as it’s been rumored current owner Bruce Levenson (who is selling his stake after a racist e-mail) has been overwhelmed with the amount of offers he has been receiving.

Whomever purchases the organization will need deep pockets considering the last three sales (Kings, Bucks, Clippers) each broke the record for highest grossing sale in league history.
