Northwestern head coach Pat Fitzgerald isn’t mincing words about his team’s performance in the early going of 2014.

After consecutive losses to Cal and Northern Illinois, Fitzgerald is being up-front and candid about what he thinks of his squad.
And he agrees that fans have good reason to be ticked off about how the Wildcats have started out of the gate (via insidenu.com):
"Fitz on the fans being pissed: “No s–t … we’re an embarrassment to anyone who’s ever put on the purple and white.” He also said that this is the least “tough” team he’s had and that they need to execute better, the latter of which I think anyone would agree with."
Fitzgerald singled out his offensive line for particular criticism, calling their play “inexcusable.”
Outside of the Wisconsin Badgers and Michigan State Spartans, Fitzgerald could really be talking about the entire Big 10 with that “we’re an embarrassment” blast.
And frankly Wisconsin and Michigan State haven’t exactly been world-beaters. But at least those teams can hang their hats on decent first halves against powerhouse squads.
The Northwesterns of the world don’t even have a good first half against a legit team to hold up as evidence that they’ve done a single damn thing in 2014.
It will be interesting to see what happens when some of these half-baked Big 10 teams start squaring off against each other in conference play. There could be some brutal football this fall across the Midwest.
If the early going is any indication, Pat Fitzgerald might need a stint in a mental health facility come Thanksgiving.
