Remember the days of snake on the Nokia cell phones that nearly everyone around the globe had? Crazy enough, times change, and it looks like Microsoft is ready to make the same kind of change. While Nokia was once a power brand in the cell phone industry, it has lost nearly all of its luster.

In an internal memo initially obtained by GeeksOnGadgets, and then confirmed by The Verge, it looks like Microsoft has plans in place to phase out the Nokia brand.
The document says, “As part of our phased transition, we will drop the manufacturer name from product references during the Holiday campaign.”
With the removal of the Nokia title, Windows Phone will now be known as Windows, and Lumia will be the branding for each model.
Microsoft purchased the device and services portion on Nokia in September 2013 for $7.2 billion. The company, although once a strong power in the cell phone industry, has been on the decline since 2010.
Microsoft has also changed the branding regarding Nokia in other regions. Formerly known as Nokia Corporation in Finland, Microsoft has now changed the title to Microsoft Mobile.
If there is a lesson to be learned here at all, it is that if you aren’t improving, you are most definitely regressing. Nokia found itself as one of the leaders in the cell phone industry but grew stagnant with their designs and technology, eventually causing the buyout and downfall.
While Windows Phone has never taken off to a significant extent, it will be interesting to see what the branding shift does for the company.
