The St. Louis Rams are close to finalizing a contract extension that could be as long as six years with All-Pro defensive end Robert Quinn, according to Rand Getlin of Yahoo Sports.

Quinn, 24, is coming off a breakout season in 2013 when he finished second in the NFL with 19 sacks and forced seven fumbles. Only Robert Mathis of the Indianapolis Colts with 19.5 had more sacks than the former North Carolina Tar Heels defender.
Yahoo reports the extension could be between four and six years with Quinn seeking $15 million annually and that a deal could be finalized before the Rams play their Week 3 game. St. Louis exercised his fifth-year option in August and is scheduled to make $3 million this year and $6.9 million in 2015, if the two sides can’t finalize this extension.
The Rams made Quinn their first round pick in the 2011 NFL Draft that is quickly becoming one of the better drafts in the new millennium with players such as Cam Newton, Von Miller, A.J. Green, Julio Jones and J.J. Watt among the first rounders taken in that class.
It was Watt who set the bar for defensive linemen when the Houston Texans and the 2012 Defensive Player of the Year agreed to six-year, $100 million dollar extension that included a $51.87 million signing bonus, a record deal for a defensive player prior to the start of the regular season.
Quinn was selected to his first Pro Bowl team last year and recorded two tackles in the Week 1 loss to the Minnesota Vikings. With fellow defensive end Chris Long out for eight-10 weeks after ankle surgery, Quinn will have added pressure to get to the quarterback and lead this Rams defense.
