The San Francisco 49ers are not only set to host the Chicago Bears when they open up Levi’s Stadium for regular season play on Sunday night, they’re also expected to host NFL commissioner Roger Goodell.

More from NFL

Or maybe I should say were scheduled to host NFL commissioner Roger Goodell.

As is essentially tradition, the league commish is almost always on hand to witness the unveiling of a new stadium and given the San Francisco 49ers game will be broadcast to a national audience on NBC, it was the perfect time for Goodell to speak about the shenanigans going on in the league, right?

Apparently not as Goodell is no longer scheduled to attend the game according to CSN Bay Area.

"Embattled NFL commissioner Roger Goodell will not follow-through on his 2012 promise to attend the regular-season opener at Levi’s Stadium, a source said.As late as Friday evening the 49ers were expecting Goodell to attend Sunday night’s nationally televised game against the Chicago Bears to open the 49ers’ $1.2 million stadium."

While things do come up, it would seem all too convenient that Roger Goodell has decided to skip the game given everything that has been going on in the NFL during the past couple of weeks.

Legit reasoning or not, it’s going to be another black eye to the NFL and especially Goodell as it was the perfect time to make a strong stand regarding the shield, but he has decided to walk away from the opportunity.

Back in 2012, Goodell appeared via a videotaped message and stated he would attend the opening of the stadium.
