Trickett, a Florida State transfer, is in his second season as the starter at West Virginia. He had the best game of his collegiate career in the Moutaineers thrilling 40-37 win on Saturday at Maryland. He threw for 511 yards on 37 of 49 passing with four touchdowns and one interception for an impressive 186.0 quarterback rating.
West Virginia Coach Dana Holgerson turned the reins over to Trickett in the fifth game of last year when the 11th ranked Oklahoma State Cowboys came to town. Trickett responded by leading the team to a 30-21 victory.
Things went downhill for Trickett and the Mountaineers after that, as the team lost six of it’s last seven games.
Trickett has been inspiring confidence in coaches and in fans so far this year with a more firm grasp of the offense. He is more comfortable in the system, and it shows.
He has thrown for more than 300 yards in all three games so far this season, and has seven passing touchdowns and one rushing touchdown to just one interception. That’s right, Alabama didn’t even force him to make a mistake and throw an interception.
The Mountaineers welcome the fourth ranked Oklahoma Sooners to town next Saturday in their conference opener. They lost to the Sooners 16-7 in Norman last year, but that was before Trickett became the starter. He will need another 300+ yard passing game to keep the Mountaineers close in that one.
