In a case of the rich possibly getting richer, the San Antonio Spurs have previously shown interest in free agent big man Gustavo Ayon.

They of course weren’t the only franchise to show intrigue with Ayon, though appeared to be the front runner for his services until recently when the former Atlanta Hawks player decided he was going to sign abroad.
Unhappy with his NBA offers, Gustavo Ayon decided he would play for Spain’s Real Madrid this season, though has yet to sign a contract. Why? Presumebly because the San Antonio Spurs haven’t given up their pursuit of the three-year NBA veteran.
Unlike most chasing Gustavo Ayon in the NBA, the San Antonio Spurs still have their full mid-level exception available. Given that, the Spurs should have a financial advantage over any other competing team. Of course, we don’t know how much money the San Antonio Spurs are willing to give up in effort to bring Gustavo Ayon to The Alamo which complicates matters.
Ayon’s contract with Real Madrid was not released, though it was thought to be a multi-year deal. Given that, if the Spurs are to convince Ayon from signing his deal in Spain, they’ll need to pony up not only cash but they’ll also need to commit for a couple of seasons.
It’s a bit of a hefty price to pay, but it doesn’t sound like the Spurs have closed the door on the idea yet.
