They fired head coach Greg Schiano and replaced him with former Chicago Bears head coach (and Tampa Bay Buccaneers linebackers coach) Lovie Smith. They went on a spending spree for the third consecutive season. They signed Cincinnati Bengals’ defensive end Michael Johnson and offensive tackle Anthony Collins, Tennessee Titans’ cornerback Alterraun Verner, Chicago Bears’ quarterback Josh McCown, New England Patriots’ linebacker Dane Fletcher and Oakland Raiders’ cornerback Mike Jenkins.. They traded wide receiver Mike Williams and drafted former Texas A&M Aggies’ wide receiver Mike Evans. Just prior to the season, they dealt a draft pick and tight end Tim Wright to the Patriots for guard Logan Mankins.
Things, however, haven’t worked out. the Bucs have been hit hard by injuries (Jenkins was placed on Injured Reserve on Monday) and after losing to the Cam Newton-less Carolina Panthers 20-14 in week one, they fell to the St. Louis Rams 19-17 in week two. During the loss to the Rams, they received more bad news, this time regarding linebacker Mason Foster.
According to Adam Caplan of ESPN.com and SiriusXM Satellite Radio, Foster has dislocated his shoulder and is not expected to play when the Buccaneers take on the Atlanta Falcons Thursday night.
Fletcher will likely start in his place.
Foster made 92 tackles, three interceptions and two sacks last season and has 11 tackles so far this season.
