When the Boston Celtics decided to draft Marcus Smart with the No. 6 overall pick in the 2014 NBA Draft, many believed that to be a sign regarding Rajon Rondo’s future with the organization.

For what it’s worth, the Celtics say Rondo is still part of their ‘big plans’ but it seems Marcus Smart is more than that to Boston – he’s their future.
The organization has built up the former Oklahoma State star this offseason and believe he can be a ‘very special’ player on the defensive side of the ball. That’s the word from Boston Celtics head coach Brad Stevens who is a huge fan of the beastly shooting guard.
“Marcus is a guy that I think is a jack of all trades offensively, but defensively could be very special.”
While Marcus Smart isn’t much of a shooter at this point of his career (completely fixable in most cases), that’s about the only blemish (along with shot selection) on the offensive side of the ball for Smart. How his defense will translate at the NBA level remains a question mark, though given his big body, he shouldn’t have much trouble bruising opposing talent around.
Marcus Smart may not be an impact star to begin his NBA career, though he appears to have all the tools one needs to become a franchise player for the Boston Celtics.
