Speed kills. That statement is true across a number of professional sports. It is more consistently applicable in professional leagues like the NFL or the NBA, but when put in the right position, speed can kill in Major League Baseball as well.

The Kansas City Royals pulled out a walk-off 4-3 victory on Monday night against the Chicago White Sox and showed just how valuable it can be to have elite speed on the base paths.

Lorenzo Cain came up to bat for the Royals with the score tied 3-3 in the bottom of the ninth inning. His most important contribution was putting the ball in play, even if it was not hit especially hard.

Cain ended up with a squib of an infield hit that fell between the two middle infielders, and the speedy Terrance Gore took it from there: on second base to begin the play, Gore scored without the ball leaving the infield or, frankly, without the White Sox even having a chance to realize what was happening.

Check out video of the walk-off victory below.

With the victory, the Royals gain a half game on the idle Oakland Athletics and stand to put enough game between themselves and the Seattle Mariners in the American League Wild Card standings.
