In one of the most surprising moves of the offseason, the Dallas Mavericks signed Chandler Parsons to an offer sheet worth over $46 million over three years and the Houston Rockets declined to match the offer. Many have criticized the Rockets for that move, especially after they failed to land either Chris Bosh or Carmelo Anthony, but they obviously didn’t want to spend that kind of money.

According to Chuck Myron of Hoops Rumors, the Mavericks overpaid for Parsons.

"Chandler Parsons is the sort of do-it-all player who’s easy to like, but he’s not the definitive sort of talent who should be making close to $15MM a year. It’ll look better once the salary cap goes up, but it’s still an overpay.Sure, that’s a nice package for the Mavs, but that doesn’t mean they aren’t still overpaying Parsons. I think you could make that argument with a lot of combos around the league."

The Mavericks really weren’t in play for many other key players so even if it is a bit of an overpay, they had to do it to land their guy.

Parsons averaged 16.6 points, 5.5 rebounds, 4.0 assists and 1.2 steals per game while shooting 47.2% from the field, 37.0% from beyond the arc and 74.2% from the free throw line last season. Parsons also shined in the Rockets’ six-game series loss to the Portland Trail Blazers in the first round of the postseason. He went for 19.3 points, 6.8 rebounds and 2.3 assists per game while shooting 43.8% from the field, 36.1% from three and 73.3% from the foul line.  In his three-year career, the former Florida Gator has put up 14.1 points, 5.2 rebounds, 3.3 assists and 1.1 steals per game while shooting 47.3% from the field, 37.0% from three and 70.5% from the chairty stripe.
