Sure, you may think of the Cleveland Cavaliers and San Antonio Spurs to be the on-paper favorites, but the Dallas Mavericks may have had the best offseason of any team in the NBA (outside of Cleveland re-signing LeBron James).
Yes, the Dallas Mavericks did lose Shawn Marion and Vince Carter, but replacing them will be a collection of talent which includes Tyson Chandler and Chandler Parsons. Not only did the Dallas Mavericks appear to improve from a talent standpoint, they also plugged a few holes. Given that, might they be a contender for the NBA title?
"In the end, it will boil down to seeding and how much Dirk Nowitzki has left in the tank. If the Mavs secure a top seed out West and Rick Carlisle manages to keep Nowitzki somewhat fresh for the playoffs, a run to the Western Conference Finals is not outside of the realm of possibility. Though the roster could use another solid two-way rotation player, this Mavericks team may be a more serious contender than many realize."
Betting on an aging star isn’t normally something you’d want to do, but Dirk Nowitzki isn’t just a normal aging star. Given that and Dallas’ well balanced roster, it wouldn’t be shocking to see the Mavericks emerge as one of the NBA’s elite this season.
