Ricky Rubio contract extension negotiations remain ongoing
With the 2014 FIBA World Cup behind him, the next thing on Ricky Rubio’s agenda is a contract extension from the Minnesota Timberwolves.
Throughout the summer, it’s been reported that Rubio’s agent has pushed for a max contract but the T’Wolves have yet to budge on their stance of not offering him. But this hasn’t stopped negotiations as Jon Krawczynski of the Associated Press reports the two sides are still holding contract talks.

Last season, Ricky Rubio averaged a career-low 9.5 points, a career-high 8.6 assists, and 4.7 rebounds per game. Those are decent numbers for a pass-first point guard, but Rubio’s ability to score the ball has drawn concerns when attempting to figure out his value. He shot 38 percent from the field, 33 percent from three, and 80 percent from the free-throw line.
As a starting point guard whose agent is demanding a max contract from the Timberwolves, those numbers are going to have to improve expeditiously. Outside of his scoring, Rubio’s game is borderline perfect, but if he’s unable to hitch that part of his game up, he’ll never live up to the expectations placed upon him.
Regardless of his statistics, the opportunity for a max contract will only come if the Wolves believe he’ll make the leap as a point guard. It’s possible, but right now this team has no reason to budge on their stance–they’ve until the summer to hammer out a deal because of Rubio’s restricted free agency.
As Krawczynski stated, the deadline for Rubio to sign an extension is October 31st.
