Devin Hester made NFL history on Thursday night when he returned an NFL-record 20th career return touchdown. After years of torching special teamers for the Chicago Bears, Hester made the Atlanta Falcons look genius for luring him away from Chicago. As it turns out, getting Hester away from the Bears wasn’t nearly as hard as one might think.

“I’m gonna say it, man. I wasn’t happy the last three or four years in Chicago,” Hester said on NFL Network, per ESPN, after the team’s 56-14 drubbing of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers which saw Hester break the return record set by Deion Sanders.
“Things weren’t going the way I expected,” Hester continued. “I would always have a great camp; have all the receivers saying and all the coaches saying I had the best camp out of all the receivers. And then, once the season starts off, I’m not there.”
While Hester has always possessed world-class speed, he was never able to turn that into a breakout year at receiver in Chicago. Few could really tell why and many blamed Hester. Now we’re hearing his side of the story.
“I’ve got a quarterback now that … he loves even the walk-ons,” Hester said, “and coaches that know how to get the ball to me; how to make plays for me. I’m excited for this season, man. This is only the beginning for our team.”
