Tiger Woods has 14 major victories while golf legend Jack Nicklaus finished his career with 18. While Tiger mail trail Nicklaus in major wins, it was a different time. More players are more talented in this day’s game. But does that make Tiger the best to have lived? According to Jack Nicklaus it does.

In a profile on Tom Watson by Golf Digest’s Tom Callahan, Watson talked of a time when he and Jack Nicklaus were watching Tiger play golf on television.

“Nicklaus and I were watching Tiger play on TV,” Watson said. “I can’t remember where it was. I think it was at the Senior Skins Game. So we were in Hawaii. I said, ‘Bear, he’s the best, isn’t he?’ Jack said, ‘Yeah, he’s the best.'”

Nicklaus has always been an avid supporter of Tiger, and has been confident for a long time that Woods would break his major victories record even as he progresses in age.

The debate for the greatest golfer of all-time is an interesting one. While Tiger leads Nicklaus in all-time PGA tour wins, he still falters in the greatest category of major victories.

Tiger Woods has not won a major in six years, the 2008 U.S. Open at Torrey Pines. The 1996 PGA Tour rookie of the year and 11-time PGA Tour Player of the Year has won the Masters Tournament four times, but not sine 2005; the U.S. Open three times, the British Open three times and the PGA Championship four times.

He’ll look to bounce back from injury next season and prove to the world why Jack Nicklaus is right about him being the best.
