According to Andy Greeder of The St. Paul Pioneer Press, who spoke to Timberwolves’ general manager Milt Newton, the Timberwolves are in no rush to extend Rubio.
"“If we can get something done sooner, great. If not, we’re not necessarily in a rush,” Newton said Thursday after a pre-training camp workout. The Wolves and Rubio’s agent, Dan Fegan, have been able to negotiate since July 1 and have until Oct. 31. Newton said the sides are in “constant contact” but stopped short of calling that “negotiations.”“Knowing Ricky the person, he wants to be here,” Newton said. “We just have to deal with his agent.”"
The max contract the Timberwolves could give Rubio would be worth about $90 million over five years, which is a lot of money to dish to a player who is limited offensively as far as scoring goes. The Timberwolves may opt to let him hit restricted free agency and see what kind of offers he gets instead.
Rubio averaged 9.5 points, 8.6 assists, 4.2 rebounds and 2.3 steals per game while shooting 38.1% from the floor, 33.1% from beyond the arc and 80.2% from the free throw line last season. In his career, he’s put up 10.1 points, 8.1 assists, 4.1 rebounds and 2.3 steals per game while shooting 36.8% from the floor, 32.3% from three and 80.1% from the charity stripe.
