No one really knows why, but for whatever reason, Rutgers just can’t seem to get out of its own way the past couple of years. In particular, athletic director Julie Hermann can’t seem to keep her name out of the negative spotlight, and apparently, she has done it again. Although this time, she may have made herself look more hypocritical than ever.

Just a short time after having to apologize to Penn State for some crude actions of Rutgers fans toward the Nittany Lions that involved the Jerry Sandusky scandal prior to last Saturday’s match up on the football field, Hermann made a Sandusky joke of her own in a staff meeting.

“Julie’s comment was an off the cuff response to a give-and-take interaction urging the fundraising team to reach out and touch the donors,” said Pete McDonough, senior vice president for external affairs, when pressed for a statement from Rutgers President Robert Barchi. “There probably isn’t a person alive today who hasn’t made an impromptu remark in a private meeting that probably shouldn’t have been said. Even taken out of context, this single comment was not directed at Penn State, its students, staff or faculty.”

Okay, this is true. No, there hasn’t been a person that hasn’t made an off the cuff, regrettable response to something at one point in their life. But again, this isn’t the first time that Hermann has brought criticism upon herself.

She even had the employees in the room dumbfounded.

“I know there were two or three of us that looked at each other, and I said, “You gotta be kidding going down that road,” the employee said. “Comparing relationships with donors or with people in organizations that we want to drum up and get money from in that relationship and saying we have to get close to them and touch them? And she goes ‘not like Sandusky.’ “

Oh Rutgers. You’re never ceasing to amaze anyone with the ignorance. But just a bit of advice, even though you act as if you represent the New York market, you’re never going to live that pipe dream if you keep this up.
