Trent Richardson reflects on trade to Colts: ‘It was a humbling situation’
Trades in football are certainly rare, and seemingly occur only during the offseason or during the NFL draft. It is extremely rare to see blockbuster trades in the middle of an NFL football season, but last year the Indianapolis Colts and the Cleveland Browns pulled off one of the biggest trades in NFL history at the time.

The Browns sent former Alabama star running back Trent Richardson to the Colts for a first round draft pick. The trade sent shockwaves throughout the entire NFL, and Richardson himself could hardly believe it.
Only a year prior to the trade, Richardson was selected by the Browns No. 3 overall behind Andrew Luck and Robert Griffin III. Just a year later, Richardson was suddenly teammates with Luck after being dealt by the Browns.
Although Richardson had a tough go his first year in Indianapolis, he is finally showing signs of improvement in the first two games of this season. Now, a year after the trade that sent him to the Colts, the media recently asked him to reflect on the past 365 days.
“I finally got to see the downside of football,” Richardson told the IndyStar candidly. “I’ve never been on the bottom, never not been the guy who’s having the most success. All my life I have been on top in football. Never had to struggle at all.”
“I got to learn a lot about me, a lot about my family, my real friends, my teammates,” Richardson continued. “It was a humbling situation, not just for me.”
Richardson has yet to tally an 100 yard rushing game for the Colts, but with a 79 yard outing last week, Richardson is moving in the right direction.
