Tweaking the roster prior to their week 3 matchup against division rival in the Green Bay Packers, the Detroit Lions have released veteran wide receiver Kevin Ogletree.

From the Detroit News:

"In a corresponding roster move to the promotion of cornerback Mohammed Seisay from the practice squad, the Lions released wide receiver Kevin Ogletree on Saturday, according to a report by ESPN.Ogletree, who’s in his sixth NFL season, was inactive for the Lions’ first two games, and the Lions cut him to add depth in a secondary depleted by injuries."

After being waived by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers mid-2013, Ogletree found a home with the Detroit Lions. Appearing in 12 games, Ogletree tallied 13 receptions, 199 yards and a touchdown. In the following off-season, Ogletree agreed to a one-year deal to return to the Lions.

Expected to appear in a bigger role following the preseason, the Ogletree experience didn’t work out for Detroit. Third on the depth chart, Ogletree was expected to be a release valve for quarterback Matthew Stafford as defenses facing up against the Lions often prepare their defense to contain stud wide receiver Calvin Johnson. With the addition of Golden Tate, formerly of the Seattle Seahawks, things were supposed to open up for whomever the third receiver — or slot — would be. For Detroit, that guy was Ogletree.

A talented receiver at the age of 27, there’s still time for Ogletree to become an effective receiver. Injuries will be an issue going forward, but if health can improve, some team will surely pick him up, whether via waivers or through the free agency process.

With Ogletree released, the Lions now have five receivers on the roster: Calvin Johnson, Golden Tate, Corey Fuller, Ryan Broyles, and Jeremy Ross.
