Kansas City Royals add bullpen depth, recall Tim Collins
By Ed Carroll
The Kansas City Royals recalled former bullpen stalwart Tim Collins to aid its bullpen, as the Royals attempt to come back and claim the American League Central in the final week. Kansas City trails the division-leading Detroit Tigers by a game-and-a-half following the Royals’s 10-1 loss against the Tigers in Kansas City, with two more to play in the series against Detroit.

Collins, a 25-year old left-hander, posted sub-4 ERAs in his first three seasons, all with Kansas City, and topped more than 50 innings each time, including 67 innings pitched in 2011, his rookie year, and 69.2 innings pitched in 2012. This season has been a different story for Collins, who’s allowed 8 earned runs in his 18.1 major-league innings this year. Collins has spent most of the season at Triple-A Omaha. Standing at just 5’7″, the lefty is occasionally called “Tiny Tim” due to his size.
Adding Collins isn’t necessarily an impact move for the Royals, but it does give Royals Manager Ned Yost another option to use in his pen, and could be especially beneficial in Kansas City’s upcoming trip to Cleveland, as the Cleveland Indians struggle against left-handed pitching of all types.
