The 11th ranked Michigan State Spartans destroyed Eastern Michigan by the score of 73-14 on Saturday. They even covered that 45.5 point spread! Not bad for a “rebound” game!

A 43-yard punt return by Macgarrett Kings gave the Spartans great field position on their first drive, and they wasted no time getting in the end zone. Two minutes and 15 seconds to be exact. This is a trend that would continue over the entire game.

In fact, Michigan State played three quarterbacks in the first quarter. And why not? They were up 28-0 before the first 15 minutes even ended. This was the first time that the Spartans had racked up 28 points in the first quarter since 1997.

Starter Connor Cook threw just six passes, but completed five of them for two touchdowns, both to Tony Lippett. Still, they didn’t need to throw, so most of the game, they did not.

The Sparty defense didn’t let the offense do it all alone. They held Eastern Michigan to zero or negative yards on 21 of 25 first half plays! The Spartan defense forced six Eastern Michigan turnovers in the rout.

Eastern Michigan finally got on the board halfway through the third quarter on a 43 yard touchdown pass to Tyler Allen from Rob Bolden. The Eagles forced a fumble and again got in the end zone to cut the lead to 56-14.

Then Michigan State and Delton Williams went back to work. Williams scored twice within a span of three minutes. Once on a seven yard run, and again on an 80 yard romp that pushed the lead to 73-14 Williams led all rushers with 103 yards on ten carries and three touchdowns. Star RB Jeremy Langford ran just nine times before his day was done. He accumulated 60 yards and a touchdown.

This was the most points Michigan State scored in a game since they put up 76 Northwestern all the way back in 1989.

Michigan State will host Wyoming next Saturday for a noon eastern kick time.
