San Francisco 49ers promote TE Asante Cleveland from practice squad
By Phil Watson
With two tight ends, including former Pro Bowler Vernon Davis, listed as questionable for Sunday’s game against the Arizona Cardinals, the San Francisco 49ers promoted tight end Asante Cleveland from their practice squad.
To make room on the roster the 49ers released quarterback Josh Johnson—again. The moves were announced via the team’s website.
Cleveland was an undrafted free agent from Miami and was among the 49ers’ final cuts last month. He had three receptions for 22 yards and a touchdown in the preseason.

As a senior at Miami, he started eight games and caught three passes for 23 yards and a score.
Davis is questionable with knee and ankle injuries sustained in last week’s loss to the Chicago Bears.
Backup Vance McDonald is also questionable because of a knee injury and neither Davis nor McDonald practiced this week.
Derek Carrier and long snapper Kyle Nelson are the other tight end options for San Francisco.
Johnson played collegiately for coach Jim Harbaugh at San Diego and was a fifth-round pick of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2009. He signed as a free agent with the 49ers in March 2012, but was one of the final cuts coming out of camp. He returned to San Francisco in May after stints with the Cleveland Browns and Cincinnati Bengals.
He has made five career starts, all with Tampa Bay, and has completed 54.2 percent of his passes for 1,042 yards and five touchdowns with 10 interceptions in his seven NFL seasons.
