Linebacker Melvin Ingram, plagued by injuries the last two seasons, has been placed on injured reserve with the return designation by the San Diego Chargers because of a hip injury.

The Chargers announced the move, without a corresponding roster move, on their website.

Ingram had five tackles, a sack and a forced fumble in San Diego’s upset of the defending Super Bowl champion Seattle Seahawks last Sunday, but injured his hip and had been ruled out for this week’s game at Buffalo.

However, with the return designation, he is out a minimum of eight weeks. The soonest Ingram could be back for the Chargers would be in Week 11 against the Oakland Raiders and he will miss a minimum of seven games (San Diego has a bye in Week 10).

In two games, Ingram had recorded eight tackles to go with the sack and forced fumble he had against Seattle.

A knee injury sustained during the team’s offseason program in May 2013 limited Ingram to four games last season, during which he had eight tackles, a sack and a forced fumble (popular numbers for him, apparently).

But he played a big role in San Diego’s win at Cincinnati in the wild-card playoff last January, notching three tackles and intercepting a pass.

Ingram was the 18th overall pick by the Chargers in the 2012 draft out of South Carolina and had 41 tackles, five pass breakups, a sack and a forced fumble as a rookie.

He was a consensus All-America as a senior with the Gamecocks in 2011, finishing the season with 10 sacks, 15 tackles for loss and two interceptions. He also scored a 68-yard touchdown on a fake punt and had a fumble return for a score in a win over Georgia.
