Manziel came out on the field for a hand-off, before running to the sideline as substitutes came in.
However, Brian Hoyer took the snap on the next play and threw the ball down the sideline to a wide open Manziel who gained more than thirty yards before being pushed out of bounds.
Unfortunately, it was called back because of a penalty on rookie running back Terrance West, who committed an illegal shift.

What you didn’t initially see, however, was the brilliance of the trick play. Manziel went to the sidelines and acted like he was carrying on a conversation with offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan. Manziel stayed on the field as one of the team’s 11 players and Shanahan signaled when it was time to run the route.
Brilliant.
It’s too bad a rookie mistake canceled a great play.
